Super Mario has always been a big part of Nintendo, ever since the very first Mario game was released back in the early 1980s. A couple of smash hits were released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and sold so well – literally millions and millions of copies that the executives at Nintendo decided to create a brand-new video console to showcase everything that Super Mario could bring to the table.
Thus the Super Nintendo game console was born, and ever since Super Mario game have been a big part of this company’s future.
Of all the different Super Mario games made, however, three stand head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. We highlight the three very best Super Mario games below, breaking them down a little bit and encouraging you to play them just as soon as you get an opportunity to do so!
Let’s dive right in!
Super Mario 64 (Get Super Mario 64 ROM Here!)
Super Mario 64 was considered to be the greatest video game ever created when it was first released in 1996, taking full advantage of all the amazing hardware and technology that Nintendo had poured into the Nintendo 64 – their latest console at that particular point in time.
This was the first time that anyone had the opportunity to see Mario in 3-D, and even today these graphics hold up when you take into account the stylized world that is Super Mario. Players had the opportunity to explore this universe in ways they weren’t able to previously, as this was the first Super Mario game to really diverge from the platforming gameplay of all previous titles.
And boy did that make for a lot of fun!
Sure, getting control of the camera to give you the right viewpoint to explore the world of Super Mario 64 was a little bit of a hassle and headache – but once you got the hang of things you were able to execute commands in the world without any trouble at all.
There are still some people that can pick up a Nintendo 64 controller, fire up this game, and slide right back into the fun they had oh so many years ago. It’s just like riding a bike!
Super Mario RPG – Legend of the Seven Stars (Get Super Mario RPG ROM Here)
One of the newest Super Mario games to be re-released, and the first to be released on the Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Counsel retro service, this particular game, Super Mario RPG, won award after award when it was first released and has gone on to cement itself as one of the most critically acclaimed of all the Mario games created.
Basing a tremendous amount of that game off of the kind of RPG elements that video game series like Final Fantasy had helped to pioneer (not surprising since the developers behind that game series created this title for Nintendo), this was a completely different direction for Mario to travel in but it was welcomed with open arms.
Mario and his friends were placed into roles that they hadn’t ever been placed into before, though the general “beats” of all Mario games were still here – the Princess had been captured by Bowser and Mario, Luigi, and the rest of the crew had to do everything in their power to rescue her.
Pretty early on, however, the story diverges from the standard Mario fair. Another rival heads off Bowser and causes headaches for Mario, and while we won’t spoil anything else for you it’s enough to say that this makes for an exciting and tense gameplay that a lot of the earlier titles just didn’t have due to the lack of RPG elements.
Super Mario World (Get Mario ROM Here)
The most successful, influential, and important of all the Mario games after the first three were released, Super Mario World – which shipped with the original Super Nintendo – not only helped to cement this little red suited plumber as the logo and face of Nintendo from now on, but it also helped to sell hundreds of millions of Super Nintendo systems and legitimize video games as a form of entertainment forever.
Super Mario World is considered by many to be the very best of the best when it comes to all of the Mario titles. There are still some that love the classic NES games (Super Mario 3 in particular is a big fan favorite and it’s easy to see why), but there’s just something special and completely different about Super Mario World that transformed videogame expectations once and for all.
Opening up an entire world for Mario and his friends to explore (a lot like Super Mario 3), this world is also filled with dinosaurs – one of which you are going to be able to befriend, and a character that would become one of the most immediately recognizable Nintendo characters of all time as well.
Of course we’re talking about Yoshi!
Elegant level design allows you to find new ways to solve the platforming puzzles presented to you, and because you have a variety of different powers, friends, and tools to take advantage of as you navigate the landscape of Super Mario World the options are almost truly endless as far as figuring out how to get through each stage is concerned.
Yes, this game is still pretty linear (it is, after all, still a Mario platforming game), but the freedom to explore, the freedom to experiment, and the freedom to really blaze your own path in Super Mario World really transformed expectations and showed the world what video games could eventually become!
These are the three most popular, most exciting, and most influential of all the Super Mario games and you want to play through each and every one of the next chance you get!
